孪生兄弟龙尼·克雷和雷吉·克雷出生后由意志坚强的母亲维奥莱特和两个姨妈抚养成人，两兄弟从小生活在女人堆里，对妇女产生了敬畏的感情。50年代，已长大成人的克雷兄弟变得冷酷无情了，喜欢暴力。克雷兄弟在伦敦接收了一个行将倒闭的弹子房，改造成一家夜总会。雷吉看上了青年姑娘弗朗西丝便和她结了婚。这引起了龙尼的妒忌。他带来姨妈罗丝的噩耗，打断了雷吉和弗朗西丝的蜜月。60 年代，克雷兄弟得到了美国下层社会匪帮的支持，吞并了了他们对立的马耳他匪帮的地盘，扩大了他们的王国。此时，弗朗西丝受到周围黑社会沉重的压力，而且不能与她的婆婆相处，她越来越神经过敏，郁郁寡欢，终于自杀了。这给雷吉打击很大，他得了抑郁症而精神崩溃。龙尼为了帮助他的弟弟从绝望中挣脱出来，两兄弟便向他们的敌人发起攻击。
