1882年，美国国会通过《禁止输入中国劳工法案》，该移民法规定禁止在1943年以前输入中国劳工，以维持社会的稳定，此后至1943年的几十年间，美国社会一直相当排斥华人。虽然1943年《废除禁止输入中国劳工法案》规定中国居民可以移民美国，但直至1947年，禁令仍作用于中国女性。本片故事时间背景是1924~1947年，期间大批留美男性华人无法申请他们的家眷赴美。1945年，美国国会通过《战时新娘法案》，允许美国军事人员的118,000名配偶及子女移民美国。华人Ben Loy（王盛德）因加入过美军，在战后依该法案回乡与Mei Oi（缪骞人）结为夫妻，并将其带回美国。在唐人街，Ben Loy谋得一份餐馆经理的职业，由于工作较为繁忙，加上父辈一直逼迫着传宗接代，他在性生活上逐渐有心无力，终导致Mei Oi搭上黑道人物Ah Song（曾志伟）。中国人无论走到哪里，都视面子为第一位，悲剧不久发生。
