来自非洲小国一家孤儿院的五个孤儿，在一位故事家的帮助下，创造并讲述了一个以八岁女孩莉娅娜为主人公的童话故事，故事里有他们的真实经历，也有他们的美好愿望。
莉娅娜在一个小村子出生长大，从小家境贫苦，家里有祖母、母亲、一对双胞胎弟弟，还有一个酒鬼父亲。弟弟们两三岁的时候，父亲不顾妻儿，自己去城里打工，夜夜喝酒泡夜店，感染了艾滋病，很快去世了。母亲随后也被发现感染了艾滋病毒，不久也离开了人世。一天晚上，三个强盗闯进家里，把莉娅娜打昏，带走了双胞胎弟弟。祖母知道后告诉她强盗一定是把弟弟们带到山的另一边卖给坏人，让她去把弟弟们救回来。祖母拿出一条披巾和一条项链给她戴上，告诉她这些可以保护她。莉娅娜听了祖母的话，带着家里的一头公牛上路了。莉娅娜在寻找强盗的旅途上战胜了种种困难，找到强盗后，她发现弟弟和其它三个孩子被强盗关在一起。莉娅娜通过顽强的意志和机敏的头脑战胜了强盗，最终将被困的孩子们解救出来。莉娅娜发现另外三个孩子也没了父母，于是大家一起回到了莉娅娜的家。生活依旧艰难，但他们并不觉得，因为现在是他们一起面对生活的苦与乐，他们已是一家人。
