杰雷米亚是名年老的裁缝、放债人，和他卧床不起的母亲居住在一所破旧的公寓里。他已经年近七十了，丑陋而猥亵，富有而吝啬，愤世嫉俗而饱含嘲讽。他与任何事情都有着一种病态的关系。他利用自己的金钱，强行把自己插入到别人的私人生活之中。但他认为自己是公平而且对社会有用的人，他借钱给人能挽救那些家庭，是一种特别意义上的“家庭朋友”。一天，一个男人因女儿罗莎的婚事向他借钱，他一看到这个迷人的造物，就沉湎于“美女和野兽”的想象。他许诺如果他能碰她，他就给出更低的利息
