该片位列“最伟大的一百部德国电影”第44位，为世界首部女同性恋电影。故事背景是一所女校，里面的学生都是军官的女儿，恋情发生在学生玛努薇拉和冯?伯恩伯格夫人之间。玛努薇拉刚刚死了母亲，她像所有的同学一样崇拜女教师伯恩伯格，因为后者是所有教师中唯一不相信棍棒教育的人。但不久她们彼此便感到异样的吸引，虽然老师不愿承认这一点。一次，在学校的戏剧节上，玛努薇拉领衔主演了席勒的《唐?卡洛斯》并大获成功。在其后的庆祝会上，当所有的女孩都喝得有点醉时，玛努薇拉向老师表白了她的爱情。但是不巧校长听到了炽烈的尾声，遂把玛努薇拉送进了医务室。但玛努薇拉却在校长和伯恩伯格夫人谈话时，从医务室逃出来，爬到了学校楼梯井顶端，打算跳下去……
