曾经，圣地亚哥（斯宾塞·屈塞 Spencer Tracy 饰）是当地最优秀的渔夫，只要他向大海发出进攻，空手而归从来都是不可能发生的事情。可是如今，圣地亚哥已经垂垂老矣，连续数个月的颗粒无收让他明白，情势不容乐观。面对同行们的质疑和嘲笑，圣地亚哥表面上波澜不惊，内心里却暗暗焦急。为了捕到鱼，圣地亚哥来到了一片陌生的水域，在这里，他发现了一个“大家伙”，随后，圣地亚哥和水里的大家伙展开了数轮争斗，最终将其捕获。很快，水中的血腥味引来了成群的鲨鱼，为了保护自己的战利品，为了守护自己的荣誉，圣地亚哥又展开了和鲨鱼之间的殊死搏斗。
