年届不惑的女子伊琳诺·兰斯（莉莉·泰勒 Lili Taylor 饰）生活一塌糊涂，她牺牲自己的幸福，十几年里悉心照顾患病在床的母亲。母亲去世后，妹妹简（Virginia Madsen 饰）又图谋夺取她的房产。走投无路之时，伊琳诺从报纸上看到一则失眠研究所的志愿者征询广告，受征询金额的吸引，她决定报名参加。与之异同应征的还有西奥·多娜（凯瑟琳·泽塔·琼斯 Catherine Zeta-Jones 饰）与卢克·桑德森（Owen Wilson 饰），在发起人马洛教授（连姆·尼森 Liam Neeson 饰）的带领下，他们来到了一座建成已有上百年的庄园。该庄园不仅历史悠久，而且曾发生过无数神秘的死亡事件。这里诡异阴森的气氛让伊琳诺等人倍感不安，而各种奇怪离奇的事件也让他们产生不祥的预感。似乎，莫大的危险正在前方等待着他们……
