洛杉矶的大龄女子朱莉娅（蒂尔达·斯维顿 Tilda Swinton 饰）是个酒鬼，每晚喝醉后就跟陌生男人鬼混，直到因迟到丢了工作，被朋友米切（绍尔·鲁宾内克 Saul Rubinek 饰）强行送去参加戒酒协会。在协会里，朱莉娅认识了邻居伊莲娜（凯特·德尔·卡斯蒂洛 Kate del Castillo 饰），后者求朱莉娅帮忙绑架自己的十岁儿子汤姆（艾丹·库德 Aidan Gould 饰）。钱迷心窍的朱莉娅决定帮忙，并打算在伊莲娜得手后从她那儿抢走汤姆，索要赎金。但事情的发展并没能全按计划发生，朱莉娅不得不直接找汤姆的富豪爷爷敲诈二百万美元；取钱行动失败后，朱莉娅带着汤姆逃到圣地亚哥以南的沙漠，并在边境警察追捕偷渡者的搜捕行动中一头撞进了墨西哥。就在朱莉娅与汤姆真正开始建立情谊之时，汤姆竟然失踪了……
