索尔-巴斯（1920 - 1996）是二十世纪最伟大的平面设计大师之一，他曾为许多经典影片设计过海报和片头并且同样是一位极有天赋的导演。这部《人为何要创造？》是他的个人电影代表作，被认为是美国百年影史上最具创造力的一部短片。它用影像讲述了人类最初要创造发明的目的、条件、实现的过程和逐渐演变的结果等等。从主题上说它是一部教育片（Educational Film），但所使用的表现手法却非常前卫，影片共分八节并难以置信地混合了纪录片、动画和实验电影的各种制作技巧。它获得了1969年奥斯卡最佳纪录短片奖，2002年入选美国国家电影保护局登记收藏。
