1974年2月4日，恐怖组织“共生解放军”将美国报业大王威廉道夫·赫斯特的孙女、19岁的帕蒂·赫斯特（帕特里夏·赫斯特）从其未婚夫的公寓中绑架。帕蒂·赫斯特和未婚夫斯蒂夫·威德在加利福尼亚伯克利市一幢公寓中遭到了3名蒙面人袭击。斯蒂夫被捆绑在地，3名绑匪 将帕蒂劫持离去。在绑架期间，恐怖分子贬低了她过去认为是美好和珍贵的东西，同时，在帕特里夏的脑子里，一种思想似乎被另一种危险的思想所取代。后来，恐怖分子让她做出选择：是回家还是参加他们的组织？帕特里夏选择了参加恐怖组织，因为她认为恐怖分子未必真能让她活着出去。从此，她以化名“塔尼娅”参与了“共生解放军”的一系列恐怖行动：袭击、抢劫了旧金山希伯尼亚储蓄银行，到运动器械商店抢东西时被追捕，在从宾夕法尼亚州躲藏后回到旧金山又搞了新的武装抢劫。不久，在塔尼娅和共生解放军间发生了分歧。1975年9月，帕蒂被联邦调查局逮捕并受审，这对于她而言似乎是第二次绑架，从一个地狱又跌入了另一个地狱。帕蒂本人的说法是：她是在被监视的情况下被迫犯下了罪行。从法律的角度而言是否应对帕蒂提出起诉？人们对此案展开了激烈的争论。最后，帕特里夏·赫斯特还是被判了刑。1979年，帕蒂在美国总统卡特宣布对罪犯的大赦令中释放出狱。从那以后，帕蒂的生活再次发生了改变，她嫁给了自己的保镖、旧金山警察局警官伯纳德·肖，平静地生活在康涅狄格州。
