俗话说“三十而立”。一个男人要是活到了二十八九还在整天瞎晃荡，那他多半会有些危机感——弗兰克就是这么一位。
不知不觉间，二字打头的岁数已经走到了尾巴上，但弗兰克（艾丹·吉伦）的生活跟几年前比起来没有丝毫起色：依然做着那份电视节目道具设计的工作——虽不像朝九晚五的工作那么乏味，但离那些了不起艺术创作还差得远；依然和麦克、约翰、泰瑞几个同样没出息的老友混在一块儿，插科打诨没乐找乐，高兴的时候喝个烂醉；还有，依然住在那间杂货铺楼上的小公寓里，过着跟大学时代差别不大的单身汉生活。
凝视自己每天度过的日子，弗兰克觉得是该结束这“加长的青春期”的时候了。他要改变目前的生活状态，首先就从换个住处开始吧。
可能冥冥之中真的有天意的安排。恰恰在弗兰克决定作一个成熟男人的时候，爱情向他招手了——为物色新公寓，弗兰克认识了房地产经济人鲁比（凯特·艾丝菲尔德），虽然她给他介绍的房子不咋样，但两人却眉来眼去很快成了一对儿。鲁比的乐观和远大抱负感染了有些羞怯内向的弗兰克，崭新的生活似乎开始了，弗兰克觉得无比的快乐与兴奋。
但谁也想不到，有一天鲁比突然不告而别了，没人猜得出她为什么要离开弗兰克，就连脑瓜子一向灵活的麦克也琢磨不出鲁比到底是有了新欢，还是对弗兰克不满。而弗兰克呢，他的震惊和困惑似乎更多余沮丧和心痛——难道这就是真正的生活吗？
