克里斯七岁生日当天，母亲离家出走，父亲声称母亲被外星人绑架。克里斯想拍摄一部纪录片证明没有外星人绑架事件，只不过是人们的虚假记忆而已。克里斯参加了一个讨论会想要进一步去了解所谓的“外星人”。他在采访时认识了艾米丽，一个每七年就被外星人绑架一次的女孩，克里斯不相信艾米丽的故事，直到一个晚上他和布伦特驱车回家时，在路上遇到无法解释的事情，他们的车停在原地两小时，而他们却对这段记忆一无所知。那时开始，克里斯开始对这件事产生了疑惑的态度，他开始思考这一切并没有那么简单，关于母亲，关于自己。他开始慢慢靠近真相。而事实的真相到底是什么呢？真的有所谓的外星人吗？还是只是克斯利的梦魇呢？
