《狼踪》这部电影与其说是一部剧情电影，倒不如说是融合纪录片特质的一部特殊电影。本片的故事就是生物学者Farley Mowat 的亲身体验，当年他被派往加拿大靠近极地一带研究狼族的生态，是为了证明狼族这种动物已经严重威胁到麋鹿的生存，于是，Farley Mowat 开始了他这段毕生难得的体验，在那凶险的不毛之地，遍地都是大自然的严酷考验，但是在他不懈的努力之下，终于有了一番结果，但是却跟大家原本所预期的不一样！因为经过长期的观察，Farley Mowat 发现狼族根本没对任何族类的生存造成威胁，甚至，反而是狼族本身正面临到十分严峻的威胁，带给它们生存上威胁的不是别人，正是人类。而且不只是对于狼族，人类的种种行为已经严重破坏了此地区的生态平衡。
