滨海小镇里，一对老夫妻收养的姑娘朱丽叶（碧姬·巴铎 Brigitte Bardot 饰）因为容貌出众、作风不检颇受居民非议，但朱丽叶似乎全然不放心上，仍与年龄可做自己父亲的富商卡拉丁接触，卡拉丁爱慕朱丽叶，同时也对自己的行为加以限制。朱丽叶与塔迪尤三兄弟中的大哥安东尼交好，当她发现对方的真面目以后选择放弃。
监护人不再容忍朱丽叶的恣意作风，通知孤儿院将朱丽叶带回。为了把朱丽叶留在小镇，安东尼的弟弟米歇尔（Jean-Louis Trintignant 饰）向她求婚，这桩不被看好的婚姻却带给两人慵懒平静的幸福时光。不久安东尼重新回到小镇主持船厂，塔迪尤一家的气氛变得微妙。随着朱丽叶出海发生意外，这一对兄弟与卡拉丁被卷入到一场风波里去。
