维拉和卡罗拉是好朋友，经常到卡罗拉家做客。最近一段时间维拉总是不停地咳嗽，抵抗力下降，爸爸比尔带她来到了社区医院看病。正巧卡罗拉的爸爸麦尔德医生在社区医院做义工，经过检查，麦尔德医生发现维拉患有严重的营养不良。
经过和比尔的交谈，麦尔德医生得知维拉的妈妈在半年前去世，爸爸又失去了工作。独自抚养维拉和哥哥让比尔入不敷出。他无法给孩子们必要的生活保障和均衡的营养，好强的比尔又坚决不肯接受麦尔德医生的无偿捐助，这让麦尔德对维拉这个可爱的女孩和她的家庭感到悲哀却又不知要如何才能帮助他们。
比尔不断地寻找工作，可惜都不成功，比尔和孩子们的生活越来越差，无奈之下比尔决定先靠领取救济品度过难关，可谁又愿意伸手向政府要救济金呢？看到爸爸整日为了生计奔波，维拉的哥哥罗比悄悄逃学到汽车修理厂帮忙，原本以为可以把修好的车辆卖出去挣一大笔钱，但一场意外让车辆被毁，同时也毁掉了罗比挣钱贴补家用的心愿。
罗比逃学被比尔得知，比尔为此大发雷霆。罗比认为自己是多余的，如果没有他也许爸爸和妹妹的生活会好一些。带着这样的想法，罗比选择了自杀……
比尔因为干活卖力而被建筑工地录用，激动的他急忙赶回家中希望把这个好消息告诉孩子们，但到家后比尔看到的是在浴室内自杀的罗比。
罗比被送往医院，在医生的全力抢救下最终脱离了生命危险。在比尔和麦尔德医生的精心看护下，罗比睁开了双眼，迎接他的将会是崭新的生活。
