威廉姆（凯文·克莱恩 Kevin Kline 饰）是一位恪尽职守的教师，他不仅十分热爱自己所教授的课业，同时将教书育人当做是人生的终极目标。一位名叫贝尔（埃米尔·赫斯基 Emile Hirsch 饰）的男生出现在了威廉姆的课堂上，他是参议员的儿子。尽管贝尔桀骜不驯又喜欢带头捣乱，但威廉姆依旧从他的身上看到了闪光点，他决定绝不放弃贝尔。
