电影导演特里· 曼彻斯特在导演一部关于美国政治家和民歌鲍勃· 罗伯茨的纪录片。这部影片开始于1990 年10 月，罗伯正在竞选宾夕法尼亚州参议员。罗伯茨去以反对吸毒为宗旨的群众组织“斑纹鸽”的所在地，用歌声和演讲反对吸毒。不久，新闻记者拉普林告诉曼彻斯特：“斑纹鸽”过去一直使用运输机进行毒品走私。拉普林四处传播：储蓄和贷款的资金被不适当地挪用，以资助毒品走私。为此，电视台节目主持人和和一个专门为罗伯茨助选的人以罢工表示抗议。罗伯茨在一次电视台表演之后中了枪弹，拉普林因此被逮捕。罗伯茨马上红极一时，被誉为新右派的殉道者。他终于获得了州参议员的席位。拉普林在被证明没有向罗伯茨开枪后获得了自由，但他差点被人开枪打死。
