伊莱恩是个作家，对婚姻大事非常苦恼。她八年来的男朋友——丽贝卡的弟弟托比（比利·克鲁德普Billy Crudup 饰），从来不把结婚放在日程表里，她无法忍受遥遥无期的等待，于是选择分手。而托比，亦和他的前度恋人打得火热，在失去伊莱恩之后，他才渐渐体会到她的无可替代。
这两段感情，看来已经千疮百孔了，丽贝卡和伊莱恩该就此放手，还是另有转机……
