当柯尔韩德伦博士宣布，即将有外星与地球相撞时，谁也不相信他说的话，只有怪异又残障的百万富翁席德尼史泰顿除外。席德尼决定出资兴建一座巨大的宇宙飞船，目的是将精心挑选出的幸存者，从在劫难逃的地球运送到另一个可以住人的星球。由于韩德伦的预测显然会成为事实，于是一项全球性的抽奖就于焉诞生，目的是选出人选，让他们有机会搭史泰顿的宇宙飞船而获救。在星际中，星球确实彼此撞击，造成相当震撼的结果，但是这艘运载了过多人类的宇宙飞船，真能起飞并寻找到一个新世界吗？
