影片依照《一千零一夜》故事集的模式，以一个大故事带出若干小故事。
女奴苏玛洛得到挑选主人的自由，她选了穷小子阿拉丁，教给他爱的快乐，并给他念了一个书上的故事：国王祭祀出游，国王的诗人弟弟找到三个少男寻找欢乐，国王和王后分别选中一个少男一个少女，令他们陷入爱河。
很快，嫉妒的奴隶主找上门来，抢走了苏玛洛。阿拉丁急得快要发疯了，一个中年女人为了得到阿拉丁，帮他找到苏玛洛，却被强盗阴差阳错劫走。苏玛洛用计逃脱，并被一个小城邦奉为天命国王，她一面寻找阿拉丁，一面向绑架自己的人和强盗报了仇。
阿拉丁先被两个修女掳走玩弄，又被一个女人雇去做工，女人向阿拉丁念了个故事。所罗门王子塔尤索打猎时遇到一个年轻人，向他讲述了自己陷入狂爱最后才发现真爱就在身边的悲剧故事。塔尤索发现年轻人身边有一张公主的锦帕，于是放弃自己的王子身份，两人一起去追求公主。
公主经常梦见雌鸟落入网内雄鸟独自飞走的梦境，对求婚的男人深恶痛疾。塔尤索买通园丁，雇人在园中作画。两个画匠向王子讲述了各自的故事：一个为救魔鬼劫掳的公主而被变成猩猩，在另一位公主舍身相救之下才恢复原身；另一个在神的旨意下出海，毁灭了在海上制造灾难的“铜骑士”，却在神意指引下无意中杀掉无辜少年作为牺牲。塔尤索终于完成了花园的重建，公主见到比翼双飞的画面，心中的忧愁尽去，两人得享幸福。苏玛洛也找到了阿拉丁，阿拉丁在惊异之中见到国王脱下衣服变成自己的苏玛洛，两人历尽艰难终于幸福。
