电影的第一部分，一块空白的银幕上，一个女人的声音读着从一个殖民地美国的识字课本中选取的ABC歌谣。
第二部分，一秒钟的镜头显示一些单个的词，通常是出现在标牌上，按字母顺序排列。浅浅地，当导演一而再再而三地浏览这个字母表，每次使用一套不同的单词集，每个字母的位置都填充着图像——火焰、海浪、碾磨汉堡。到这一部分结束时，影片已经创造了一个独特的图案字母表，每个图像都关联着一个字母。
影片的最后一部分由几个长镜头组成，一个男人、一个女人和一条狗慢慢地穿过雪原，伴随着阅读关于光的中世纪文本的声音。
而中间部分，体现了结构电影严格系统的一面，固定摄影机和终场长镜头按照戈特海姆的《雾线》和其他冥想式作品的方式呈现了一种逐渐的变化。《佐恩引理》形式上的复杂性已经获得了广泛的诠释。它是有关孩子的语言获得、视觉和声音之间的竞争，或者自然与人类的关系面对字母表这样的人工系统的优越性？
