1913年，年轻的画家Pierre爱上了美丽的女裁缝师Janine。为了她，Pierre成为了一名出色的时装设计师。他们的美好时光被一战的爆发终止，Pierre参军上了前线，已有身孕的Janine则在工厂里没日没夜地生产军需物资。战后Pierre回到家乡，却听到噩耗——妻子因为身体虚弱又遇难产，在生下女儿 Jeannette后死去。Pierre一时无法接受这突如其来的变故，悲痛万分。他认为是女儿的出世导致了妻子的亡故，因而无法接受女儿的降临。
但是随着时光流逝，Pierre终于慢慢走出了失去爱妻的阴影，并且极其宠爱与亡妻颇为貌似的女儿。作为知名的时装设计师，Pierre没有再婚，也和女士们保持距离。有一天，一个长相酷似亡妻的女人闯入了他的生活。她年轻、充满朝气，并且崇拜、爱慕着Pierre。渐渐地Pierre也发现自己不由自主地爱上了这个阳光般的女孩；同时他的女儿 Jeannette也恋爱了。父女俩决定给对方一次惊喜，把自己的恋人介绍给对方。
令众人没想到的是，原来Pierre爱着的女孩正是自己女儿未婚夫的妹妹。在那个年代，这是一段不伦关系，是让人唾弃和羞耻的。看着女儿伤心欲绝，Pierre考虑再三后请求女孩原谅自己不能和她成婚。在亲自为女儿操办盛大婚礼的那一天，望着这对新人款款步入教堂，Pierre仿佛从他们身上看到了自己和亡妻结婚一刻的幸福画面。在幻觉中的Pierre微笑着静静地在席间倒下……。
