花花公子阿兰（莫里斯·荣内特 Maurice Ronet 饰）在疗养院中进行了六个月的戒酒治疗。疗养即将结束，但他并不能肯定自己是否痊愈。他通过看书、抽烟、写日记、把玩手枪、剪贴报纸上关于死亡的报道来平复内心的恐惧与忧伤。他和美国的妻子分居，同时又与妻子的朋友莉蒂娅（让 娜·莫罗 Jeanne Moreau 饰）纠缠在一起。莉迪亚要求阿兰与妻子摊牌，与她生活在一起，但阿兰拒绝了。回到疗养院，阿兰在医生的鼓励下决定试着重新融入社会，接触自己的朋友们。在巴黎，他开始拜访昔日的朋友，却发现今时的人们全都背叛了从前的社会观、政治观，变得矫揉造作，没有人能够理解他，甚至对他进行明嘲暗讽。阿兰心中刚刚燃起的积极信念彻底地被摧毁了，他无法掩饰对这个世界的厌恶，再次陷入绝望之中。阿兰最后一次把自己灌醉，醒来之后，收拾完房间和行李，接了一个电话，读完一本费兹罗杰的小说，他拿出手枪朝着自己的心脏开了一枪。
