西班牙。偏僻贫困、被世人遗忘的维亚尔·德里奥小镇，一天突然来了位政府官员，宣布马歇尔援助团不日即将到达本镇，要当地人以相应的规格接待好美国代表团。消息传开，全镇哗然。各种阶层、各行各业，各种派别的人纷纷做起黄金梦来，每个人都希望从美国佬那里得到自己想得到的东西。然而美国人始终没有光临小镇，人们的幻想和希望都成了泡影。很快，维亚尔·德里奥小镇又恢复到昔日贫困而被人遗忘的状态之中。
影片以辛辣的口吻讽刺了西班牙当时的社会现象和所渭“美援”的骗人之举。影片在嘎纳国际电影节（1953年）获得评委大奖。不仅使贝尔兰加一举成为国际知名导演，还为外国了解西班牙电影，促进西班牙电影业发展开辟了道路。
