自幼就对被誉为“非洲圣人”的阿尔伯特·史怀哲医生心怀敬仰的岛田航一郎（大泽隆夫 饰），成年后如愿成为一名白衣天使，接着更追随着先哲的脚步远赴非洲从事医疗服务工作。在肯尼亚盘桓半年后，他和同侪前往战火纷飞的红十字医院做医疗支援。在那里，航一郎见到了人世间最惨烈的景象，少年士兵端枪杀人，之后又被驱赶着走入雷区。孩子们撕心裂肺的哀嚎让航一郎心痛不已，他们冷漠又充满敌意的眼神则让他忧心忡忡，更可怕的是孩子们一旦伤愈就必须再度返回战场，直至战死。深感责任重大的航一郎申请延期回国，与同样来自日本的护士和歌子（石原里美 饰）每日奔忙在救死扶伤的最前线。他是一头孤独而勇敢，迎风而立又绝不低头的狮子……
本片根据的日本医生柴田紘一郎的事迹改编。
