在本片中，奎氏兄弟二人俨然化身为破解16世纪欧洲绘画图像密码的研究人。该片如同一部科教片甚至教程，它将在剪下的纸片上绘制的人像和立体木偶结合起来，浑然一体地同时表现出平面和立体定格动画的特色。片中所讲解的是16世纪的一些欧洲绘画中是怎样将隐晦的图像通过透视变形转化为可以掩人耳目的另一重直观图像的：一幅画正面看上去是风景画，而从斜侧面看去则能看出另一个肖像。
片子在结束前举出了运用这种图像失真的绘画方法的最著名的例子——小汉斯?荷尔拜因在1533年所作的《大使肖像》。该画的中下方那个有名的“骷髅透视”同时也暗示了“荷尔拜因”这一名字的由来：“Holbein”即“Hollow bone”——“Hohl bein”之意。
