1957年，年仅25岁的路易·马勒执导了《通往绞刑架的电梯》而一举成名，影片蓄意的打破了传统法国电影的叙事习惯，偷师于好莱坞四五十年代的黑色电影的风格化叙事，奠定了个人风格的基础，甚至被誉为是新浪潮的先驱。而这部《与安德烈的晚餐》是导演移居美国后制作的影片，其以两个知识分子在一家餐馆的心灵交流为主线，但采取的是将剧情片与纪录片融合一起的叙事方式，而富有探索精神及实验色彩（后来徐静蕾的《梦想照亮现实》便是明显的借鉴于本片）。标准公司即将发行的版本不但重新修复了画面，还收录了全新录制的两位主角（即华莱士·肖恩与安德烈·格利高里）的访谈、BBC公司制作的相关电视节目“与路易的晚餐”等。
