◎简 介
原是黑奴的布赖特，在经历解放黑奴的南北战争后，与原任地主亚伦结为好友，两人同往西部大草原，在那建立农场开始了新的生活。但在西部法律不健全小镇，二人的生活却并不平静。地痞卡尔·格伦的恶意挑衅激起了布赖特的愤怒，二人发生冲突，虽然以格伦落荒而逃作为结果，但他发誓会回来报复。
在一个夏天的夜里，恰巧布赖特带妻子玛瑞和儿子布兰克出去度假，格伦带着枪火偷袭了他们的农场。亚伦的妻子夏洛特中枪身亡，亚伦也受了重伤。度假回来的布赖特十分懊悔当时一时冲动所结下的仇恨，并四处打听凶手的下落。亚伦在妻子去世后，一直郁郁寡欢，整日沉迷于酒醉之中，难以解脱。恍惚中，亚伦回忆起抢战中凶手的样子，并决定寻找他的下落，为妻子报仇雪恨。
布赖特担心亚伦一时冲动做出违法的事情，断送了自己的人生，接受了地区长官的建议，做了一名警长，希望能赶上亚伦，助他一臂之力。格伦像人间蒸发一样，亚伦一路打听，都没有找到关于他的任何消息。直到他找到当地的一位报业家，才知道格伦和德克萨斯州的强盗齐兹·乔顿是一伙儿的，二人近期很有可能会见面。为了找到格伦，亚伦隐姓埋名加入了这个强盗团伙，并在一次抢劫中救了齐兹·乔顿的命，博取了他的信任。
在一次抢劫中，齐兹·乔顿绑架了一位叫拉塞尔夫人富家太太，并打算向其丈夫猛敲一笔竹杠。但只有亚伦知道，这个拉塞尔并不是什么富家太太，而是格伦的死敌，来要这个无赖的命的。二人相约次日一起行动，对付这伙儿强盗。没想到，计划失败，乔顿看出端倪，与格伦带着拉塞尔先行逃走。亚伦一路追去，但势单力薄，很快他就占了下风。就在千钧一发之际，拉塞尔拔枪打死了乔顿，救了亚伦的命。很快，布赖特赶到，把格伦绳之于法，凶手最终落入法网。
