《大侠胡金铨》将分为两集上映：
第一部曲——《先知曾经来过》：以编年史的方式逐部介绍胡导演的经典电影，让观众感受他的电影魅力，并透过重要学者及影评人们解析电影美学，再加上和胡导演合作过的重量级影人如徐枫、郑佩佩、王童、徐克、吴宇森、洪金宝等，一一分享当时的回忆与细节，逐步揭露胡导演的电影方法、美学风格，和他投入艺术之风范与疯魔行径。
第二部曲——《断肠人在天涯》：细说从头讲述胡金铨飘泊一生无以为家的宿命，从北京、台湾、香港到美国，这样的宿命如何反映在他的作品之中，如何影响他的艺术生命轨迹。尤其在他晚年仍努力企图创作拍片，却一直壮志未酬的岁月，并非大家所想像风光。他是个创造时代的人，也是个在大时代翻转中，时不予我的孤独英雄。
片中并透过胡金铨一手栽培，也是《龙门客栈》《侠女》男主角石隽的脚步，重返当年拍摄场景，让镜头仿佛穿越时空，闪回当年的点点滴滴。侠客老矣，却不放弃追寻五十年的恩师记忆，如师如父，情谊真挚。
