拍摄于1971年的这部匈牙利作品，用的仍是黑白胶片。导演卡罗利?马克是匈牙利电影新浪潮中的代表人物。
影片捕捉到了强权政治之下的人心体验，这种体验并不局限于政治犯的爱情，还包括亲情，党国之情，以及政治阴云下微妙的人际。
影片讲述一位病入膏肓的老妇人，思念久未见面的儿子。而儿子却因政治原因正在服刑，儿媳编造老公在美国排演戏剧，工作太忙不能回家的美好谎言隐瞒真相，为此假造美国来信以慰老人。不久老人病逝。风云阵变，儿子获释出狱，家园依旧，而亲人不在。最后的镜头落在与妻子的相拥而泣上，画面淡出，不由唏嘘。
政治变革下的谎言，令人想起德国影片《再见，列宁》和前南斯拉夫的《爸爸出差时》，甚至在我国的《蓝风筝》中都有所反映，残酷的现实与温馨的人情形成强烈的对比，由此引出人们在艰难岁月的阵痛与迷惘。
