剧情主要发生在一列从美国西海岸开到芝加哥火车上，年轻出版商乔治克威与艺术品鉴赏家薜礼纳的秘书一见如故，两人正在温存之际，车窗外却抛下薜礼纳的尸体，乔治因而卷入凶徒的追杀之中。而潜伏在火车上的联邦密探史威知道薜教授被杀的真相，亦遭势力庞大的罗杰杀害。雪球越滚越大，最后失控的火车头竟然撞进火车站之中。导演阿瑟·希勒拍出了紧凑俐落的气氛，高潮一波未平一波又起，压轴的火车大灾难在二十年前更是令人看得目定口呆的精彩特技场面。
