钢琴师艾迪（泰隆·鲍华 Tyrone Power 饰）受到莱斯曼（Larry Keating 饰）的邀请只身从波士顿来到了纽约，指望能在卡西诺乐队里谋求一个职位，没想到当他站在莱斯曼面前之时，后者竟然出尔反尔，对自己的邀请矢口否认。幸运的是，一位名叫玛娇丽（金·诺瓦克 Kim Novak 饰）的美丽女子出面帮助了艾迪。
才华横溢的艾迪很快就得到了听众和同事们的认可，他和马娇丽之间的关系也日渐亲密，最终，幸福的两人步入了婚姻的殿堂，马娇丽的腹中更是很快便有了艾迪的骨肉。厄运从天而降，生产当日，马娇丽死于难产，看着妻子苍白的面庞，艾迪无法控制自己不去怪罪怀中哇哇啼哭的婴孩，绝望之中，他选择了离开，离开伦敦这处伤心地，也离开了他的孩子。
