故事围绕着一支职业橄榄球队——北达拉斯队展开。全队上下，从队员、教练到相关的工作人员，都认为尼克·诺特是最棒的球员。他不仅技术好，而且聪明伶俐，脑子灵活。可是球队老板却不喜欢他。对他们来说，聪明过人的尼克无疑是一匹“害群之马”。因此，球队总是想找个听话点的人来代替他。可是对于尼克和他的好友迈克·戴维思（ Mac Davis）而言，橄榄球是他们生活的全部。他们必须为之尽力拼搏，尽管这会影响到他们在球队的前途。
影片的最后是球队联盟决赛的四分之一场，北达拉斯队的对手是芝加哥队。在这个紧要关头，虽然尼克仍面临着被开除的危险，而几个对友也在比赛中重伤，但一切都已经变得无关紧要。此刻他最大的愿望就是能全取六分。他真的能做到吗？
