◎简 介
巴兹（吉恩·哈克曼 Gene Hackman 饰）、克莱顿（詹姆斯·弗朗西斯 James Franciscus 饰）和吉姆（理查德·克里纳 James Franciscus 饰）和吉姆（理查德·克里纳 Gregory Peck 饰）是三名身怀绝技的宇航员，三人被派往“铁人一号”载人飞船上，执行历时7个月的任务，在这7个月中，他们生活的每一分每一秒都会被摄影机拍下来，作为珍贵的研究资料。
很快，5个月就过去了，此时，宇航员们发现，飞船上的RCS系统发生了故障，如果继续执行任务，飞船将有坠毁的危险。航天局总部对三名宇航员发出了召回令，然而，飞船的点火系统故障令飞船无法启动，更糟的是，飞船内所剩的氧气，仅够维持四十二个小时。在这短短的四十二个小时之内，巴兹等人必须找出自救的方法，否则等待着他们的就只有窒息而死。
