本片可称为一部心理分析影片，着重展示易尔与爱丽丝的心路历程，对于人物之间的个性和心理状态的揭示很有层次感，故事情节和环境的渲染都有厚重的希区柯克影子，两位主要演员在导演沉静的基调中把演技发挥得淋漓尽致。这本小说在1946年曾拍摄过一次。
