1972年，南非。斯蒂夫还是一个小男孩的时候，就被母亲教育，一定要征服当地人，否则就有性命之忧。到了1986年，斯蒂夫已经成为一名士兵，随之准备在紧急备战状态中奔赴战场。他的女朋友是一个原本跳芭蕾，现在却不得不在夜总会谋生的舞女埃玛。埃玛美丽善良，对几次帮她修车并陪她回家的灯光师、当地黑人约瑟夫心存感激。在她心里没有什么种族之分，她希望和约瑟夫这样的黑人成为朋友。
战争来了，斯蒂夫不得不离开心爱的埃玛去履行军人的职责。但他没有想到，当自己逃离战争，回来寻找埃玛的时候，却发现一个黑人和埃玛躺在一张床上，这个黑人就是约瑟夫。原来埃玛为了感激约瑟夫，不忍总让他裹着睡袋躺在冰冷的地上，所以让他躺在床上，但神经质的斯蒂夫完全误会了。他拿着自己的武器逼迫约瑟夫讲出真相，而对埃玛的苦苦哀求却视而不见。埃玛和约瑟夫试图逃走但都失败了。
斯蒂夫指使埃玛到外面买烟和食物，又误会埃玛在外面报了警。约瑟夫企图夺下他的枪，但二人在扭打的时候枪走了火，射中了对面的埃玛。
斯蒂夫被判有罪，但他始终没有供出同时也在现场的约瑟夫。1994年5月10日，纳尔逊·曼德拉上台成为南非的总统。约瑟夫成了学校里的老师，他向孩子们讲述自己写的关于一个叫伍兹兹维（振作的意思）的男孩的故事，他还到监狱里看望斯蒂夫，并给他送上水果。斯蒂夫深受感动，和约瑟夫隔着监狱的铁栅栏流泪相拥。
