故事的主人公就是一个中产阶级家庭的爸爸、妈妈和女儿。他们的收入显然已经不仅仅是满足温饱，家庭成员之间的关系也很融洽，因此表面上看一家人很幸福。他们的生活很有规律。早上妈妈叫女儿起床，然后洗脸刷牙吃早饭，和大多数人一样。车库的门一天打开两次，爸爸早上开车出门，晚上下班把车开回家。爸爸、妈妈以及很多城市人都早已习惯这样重复着度过每一天。可是女儿还小，她的生活应该是多姿多彩、充满意外的，不仅在学校里，而且在家庭里。中产阶级的死板令她觉得自己被忽视，她不能忍受，所以有一天她突然假装失明，以引起大家的注意。
女儿的这一举动引起了大人的思考。身为中产阶级的父母认识到自己和大多数同类一样，把工作和赚钱当作了首要目标，他们努力工作只是为了工作本身，他们拼命赚钱也只是为了赚钱本身。在一切都轻车熟路以后，他们的生活已经变得既没有挑战性也没有趣味性。他们只是存在着，却不是生活着。
他们甚至感到孤立。可是看看周围其他人，不也是以同样的方式沿着生命轨迹运行？拥有了“忍耐”这一武器，“单调”就不再是生活的强敌。
这个家庭和很多中产家庭一样，面无表情地生活着，只是偶尔为那些伤感和失意落泪。但这个家庭又和其他家庭不同，因为他们决定冲破束缚。
在一个很普通的日子里，爸爸、妈妈、女儿没有用语言交流，就决定砸烂自己的家。爸爸买来钳子、榔头、锯子等工具，一家人把家具陈设都撕成了碎片。毁灭的快感给了他们前所未有的满足，即使如此他们仍然没有纵情欢呼或放声歌唱。他们再也没有放歌的机会了，因为接下来要毁灭的是自己的生命，这是他们早就决定的。
电视开着，但屏幕上没有任何信号。声色犬马的表象被清除，剩下的是一片雪花和噪音，电视的物理本质就是如此。这个没有信号的电视屏幕就是电影的最后一个镜头。
