③1937年，日本侵华战争全面爆发。由介长女由纪子受父亲的影响，加上相爱的对象柘植因卷入刺杀军务局长永田案而失去一切联系，渐渐放弃了当初对爱的执著，答应嫁给一名金融巨头的儿子。由介三女儿顺子与所爱的应征入伍的左翼学生耕平也失去了联系，但因受耕平反战思想的影响，她最终逃离了家庭，参加了和平运动，还偶然地知道了耕平正在参加援助中国的抗日运动。由介次子俊介曾因反对侵略中国而被捕入狱，出狱后也被征召入伍。作为炮灰的俊介来到决战之地诺门坎，亲眼目睹了柘植中尉在战场上死去。由于遭到苏联红军的毁灭性打击，日军仓皇撤至海拉尔，再也无以为继。侥幸不死的俊介失魂落魄地走在日军侨民逃难的人群之中。
