三十岁上的阿搏（周润发 饰）心地善良，可惜事业一事无成，长年与痴迷茅山道术的表姐金花（叶德娴 饰）相依为命，身边只有一个聋哑的昔日江湖兄弟“六尺三”跟随。某日，阿搏在一只古旧家具中发现女鬼魏小蝶（钟楚红 饰）的求助信，遂奉献三年阳寿与小蝶结为鬼夫妻，以助其脱离阴婚羁绊。魏小蝶回阳世报恩，却被阿搏误会为落难大陆妹并再次搭救。阿搏女友阿美（王小凤 饰）厌倦清苦生活频频出轨，终于弃阿搏而去，小蝶现身安慰，填补了阿搏的情感缺失，看穿小蝶女鬼身份的金花施法捉鬼，但终于被小蝶的诚意打动，反而帮助小蝶延长在阳世逗留的时间。阿美离开阿搏后生活并不如意，要求复合被阿搏拒绝后愤而自杀，化作厉鬼寻仇……
