本剧描述落魄潦倒的赌棍、瘾君子兼懒鬼Buddy Dobbs（Michael Rosenbaum）为躲债来到一座偏远的小镇。他觉得自己已经走投无路，于是萌生了自杀的念头。正当他打算从一座桥上跳下去时，一个牧师及时拦住了他。倒霉的牧师脚底下一滑，自己从桥上掉下去摔死了。Buddy突然眼前一亮……他何不盗用这个牧师的身份，以他的名义开始「全新的生活」？于是他来到一座人际关系紧密的小镇，骗当地人说自己是新上任的Loomis路德教堂的「同性恋牧师」，当地人竟然相信了。他一开始准备拿着被自己盗用身份的真牧师的所有积蓄一跑了之，但当地人——包括他自己的教堂助理——都很喜欢他，他也有点喜欢这些人。他决定放弃逃跑的念头，从此以这个「改过自新」的新形象生活下去。「治疗」对性爱疯狂的少女，盗取未成年的毒品，朗读《圣经》经文……他的日子也不算太无聊。他会把这个假身份保留多久...
