Daniel Pierce得知自己的精神分裂症是从大学时代开始的。他幻想自己与Natalie度过了一个浪漫的夏天……所谓的「Natalie」实际上是一个名叫Caroline的女人他在一次聚会上见了她一面但是从来没有喝她说过话。后来Caroline决定帮助Daniel而Daniel对自己的病情也有了更多了解。
一个谋杀嫌疑人将接受重审FBI探员Kate Moretti请求Daniel Pierce博士帮忙确定此人的精神状态及他是否具备完全行为能力。但是Daniel的鉴定结论表明此人很可能不是第一次接受审判的那个嫌疑人。难道有人使用了「掉包计」这匪夷所思的事情怎么可能这一发现导致审讯过程出现惊人的、戏剧性的变化。与此同时Kate得知负责起诉这起案件的检察官竟然是正在和她打离婚官司的丈夫Donnie RyanScott Wolf这令她感到很不舒服。
