Ned (Lee Pace )开了家派店，通过接触死尸，使他的聪明有了用武之地。但是他的聪明才智却害得他与别人越发疏远，正如女服务员Olive Snook 所发现的。当私人侦探Emerson Cod 发现他的秘密后，他的生活就变得越发复杂、难以捉摸了。Emerson 说服爱财如命的Ned 帮他从死人口里套出杀死他们的凶手的名字以破谋杀案。
接着，Ned 接手处理一个永远改变他生活的案子。他童年的梦中情人 Charlotte在一艘船上 被杀害了。她的死迫使他重新回到他的家乡去侦破此案。但一旦和Chuck 重圆，Ned 却不能将她遣返。他帮她从她死去的阿姨Lily 和 Vivian 那逃了出来。
Chuck 成为Ned 和Emerson 的PI 公司的第三个合作伙伴，但她激励他们俩要用他们的聪明才智为善，而不只是为了盈利。Ned 能与他曾经深爱过的惟一女...
