《维兰德》改编自瑞典小说家亨宁·曼凯尔的系列小说。小说主角维兰德探长是个陷入中年危机的男人，与妻子分居，与父亲关系紧张，唯一的女儿也对他时有不满。同事们对他又敬又怕，敬他总能突发异想，洞察谜案玄机，怕他时不时就发通脾气。他总是饮酒、吃垃圾食品，结果患上了糖尿病。与其他公事公办的警察不同的是，维兰德对案子总是很投入感情。
BBC版的《维兰德》是这部瑞典小说首次改编成英语电视剧。但是故事仍然是设定在瑞典的于斯塔德。而且剧组也是奔赴瑞典拍摄完成的。主角是肯尼思·布拉纳（《我与梦露的一周》中饰演奥利弗爵士，《哈利·波特与密室》中饰演黑魔法防御课老师吉德罗·洛哈特教授，还是《雷神》的导演）。他把维兰德人到中年的困窘、对受害者感同身受的同情、和内心的挣扎表演得细致入微、丝丝入扣。配角们的表演也都十分精彩。其中，汤姆·希德勒斯顿（《雷神》中饰演洛基）在剧中饰演了维兰德手下的心腹警探。第一季第一集中，尼古拉斯·霍尔特（《皮囊》《X战警 第一课》）还扮演了一个饱受父亲家暴折磨的男孩。
与快节奏、注重推理的《新福尔摩斯》不同，《维兰德》更加深沉，有种洗尽铅华的沧桑感，注重的是人文的关怀。办案的过程也更加贴近现实。每起案子，最引人深思、令人唏嘘的不是案子本身，而是案子背后的隐藏的种种玄机。就像《龙纹身的女孩》用少女失踪案折射了瑞典社会女性受侵害的问题，《维兰德》也是醉翁之意不在酒，而在反应瑞典社会各个层面上的问题，以及对人性、对人生的思考。
