故事发生在1805年，皮埃尔伯爵（保罗·达诺 Paul Dano 饰）和千金小姐海伦（塔彭丝·米德尔顿 Tuppence Middleton 饰）结为夫妻，然而两人却并非情投意合，因此婚后生活并不十分幸福。安德烈（詹姆斯·诺顿 James Norton 饰）是皮埃尔的好友，一次偶然中，他邂逅了名为娜塔莎（莉莉·詹姆斯 Lily James 饰）的美丽贵族小姐，两人一见钟情，很快便走到了一起。
之后，安德烈回到军中服役，海伦的弟弟阿纳托利（卡鲁姆·特纳 Callum Turner 饰）觊觎娜塔莎的美貌，乘虚而入，用谎言欺骗了娜塔莎纯洁的心灵，在阿纳托利的勾引和唆使之下，娜塔莎决定同他私奔。战争爆发了，当娜塔莎再度见到安德烈之时，后者已身负重伤，命不久矣。悲痛之中，娜塔莎终于看清了自己的真心，只是早已经来不及了。
