本剧改编自豆瓣阅读连载小说《她和她的群岛》，作者易难。
雷厉风行的大家长乔海云（宋春丽 饰）曾定下规矩，每逢过年所有人必须回家过，一直以来从未有人坏过规矩，直到最老实的第三代李衣锦（马思纯 饰）突然打破传统去了男友家过年，引发家族矛盾。乔海云育有三女，老大孟明玮（徐帆 饰）非亲生，因跛脚自卑所以望女成凤，和女儿李衣锦关系十分 紧张，但最终她们体谅了对方的苦衷，终于明白保持适当的距离才是维系母女关系的良方；老二孟菀青（梁静 饰）与学霸女儿陶姝娜（孙千 饰）堪称完美母女，但无话不说的二人却无意中发现了彼此的秘密，重新认识彼此的过程也是重新认识自己，二人最终明白完美的母女关系不是遮掩缺点而是彼此支撑；老三孟以安（李小冉 饰）最像乔海云，强势又独立，不想变成母亲那样的女强人，却机缘巧合与母亲走上同一条路，事业家庭平衡之艰难让她渐渐理解了当年的母亲。孟家祖孙三代女性犹如群岛一般，虽遥遥相望，却相扶、共生。
