澳大利亚经济萧条时期，阿瑟和哥哥驾车四处寻找工作未果，当他们看到小镇巴黎的路标上注明“有工作机会”时马上改道前往，岂料山路转角处出现的灯光让两人发生了车祸。阿瑟幸免于难，为镇长一家收留。小镇附近的车祸异乎寻常的频繁，居民们每次都把事故车辆拆卸一空，将伤者塞入镇医院庞大的患者群体。阿瑟因曾经出过事故而畏惧驾车，只得留在镇上，无所事事的年轻人们整日驾驶着经过改装的废旧车辆横冲直撞，阿瑟回忆起事故经过感到疑点重重，但难耐镇长好意只得默不作声。原来巴黎镇上的无业游民靠制造车祸维持生活，试图为年轻人安排工作的镇长终于和他们起了冲突，双方在舞会当晚爆发了一场血腥混战。
