50年代的意大利，战争带来的恶劣余韵还在持续着，面对强大的生存压力和微薄的养老金，曾经为政府辛辛苦苦工作几十年的退休者们终于呐喊着走上了街头，但很快便被警察驱散了。在散开的人群中，温贝尔托（卡罗·巴蒂斯特 Carlo Battisti 饰）显得格外的凄凉，他身无分文又生了病，即将要因为付不起房租而被赶出住了二十年的老宅，而在他身边一直陪伴着他的，却只有他的爱犬。女房东凶神恶煞，但她的女佣玛利亚（玛丽娅-皮埃·卡西里奥 Maria-Pia Casilio 饰）却对温贝尔托格外关照。但是玛利亚的力量微薄，不足以保全温贝尔托的住处，走投无路的温贝尔托只得牵着爱犬流落街头。他想乞讨，但放不下尊严；他想自杀，但舍弃不了人生；他想丢掉他的爱犬让它另寻主人，但爱犬的不离不弃唤醒了他心中的感动的希望。影片的最后，一人一狗渐渐远去的画面在另一个层面控诉了生活的残酷和无奈。
