影片围绕一起名画失踪案展开，约翰尼·德普饰演的查理·摩迪凯受命寻找这幅内部藏有消失已久并储存大量黄金的纳粹银行密码的画作。一路上，摩迪凯遭遇了俄罗斯大汉、国际恐怖分子等一系列“危险人物”。不过这位探案者没有007和波恩那样矫捷的身手，反而是状态频出：飙车时弄丢地图，三脚猫功夫被对手秒杀后憨笑卖萌，还动不动中招美人计。不过好在这位逗比无比且魅力十足的主角有美丽妻子乔安娜（格温妮丝·派特洛 饰演）、帅气的政府要员（伊万·麦克格雷格 饰演）和憨直勇猛的保镖乔克（保罗·贝坦尼 饰演）的帮助。

.据贝坦尼透露，德普在片中戴了一副假牙，是为了向风靡六七十年代的英国喜剧明星Terry-Thomas致敬。此人以扮演上流社会的不靠谱人物著称，外貌最显著的特征是其明显的上牙缝。
.影片中摩迪卡与乔克造访的土耳其农场拍摄地很有名，1995年《小猪宝贝》也是在那里取景拍摄的。
.影片中乔克与埃米尔在车中打斗一场戏中用到的道具剃须刀，与《理发师陶德》中用到的是同一把。两部影片都由德普主演。
