本片描写19世纪未矿工悲惨命运。在法国北方，在矿山工作的朗蒂埃爱上了一位已委身于马厄的女人凯瑟琳。不久，他因为矿上的生活条件恶劣，于是鼓动工人进行大罢工，但很快就被镇压了。工人复工后，却被一个流亡的虚无主义者破坏了有关设备，致使巷道被水淹没，朗蒂埃等都被困在里面……
根据19世纪法国著名小说家佐拉著名作品《萌芽》改编。
本片力量来源于对原著的极其忠实和导演克洛德．贝里的非凡才华：人物个性鲜明，叙事富于激情。但影片也不是十全十美的，它的有些场面说教味太浓，某一情景强调得有些过分或某部分结构有失典雅。在第19届法国电影恺撒奖中茱蒂斯．亨利饰演的凯瑟琳获最佳女演员提名。
