《金》更应该被看成一部一群满怀希望的赤贫者通往美好生活的西部片。这一类型是观众所了解的。这群人常常遭受印第安人的袭击，因而不得不走出他们的马车障垒进行防御。或者他们受到自然暴力的侵扰，或者是荒漠商队在险峻的隘口蒙受折损，或者被饥渴所迫，亦或者两名男性能手争夺领导权，最后将一切引入灾祸。阿斯兰忽略了所有这些类型元素。影片中少数的几个印第安人仅仅索要几块钱便给迷途的德国人指暴力并未介入，影片中从来只有相同的烈日路（并且是正确的路）；自然界的苍白的秋日天气；死亡关口也不曾出现，只有一匹攀登过程中筋疲力尽的、最后被赐予仁慈一枪的马；饥饿与焦渴没有抬起它们讨厌的脑袋，有的只是对碾碎的土豆的抱怨。的确，影片的三个主要男性角色——乌韦?博姆(UweBohm)扮演的渴望探险的记者、彼得?库尔特(PeterKurth)扮演的遭过分苛责的探险队领导以及马克?曼迪克(MarkoMandic)扮演的放牧人——都仅仅把某种对抗性藏在深层，而这并不会拆散整队人马。
